Energy and Mining
Mines and Energy plants are zones that leave a large impact on the environment which is why these companies require analysis about the watershed. This is why Earthfx Inc. has an important role in the creation of these projects. As well it ensures the project does not have as large an impact on the environment. See some of the projects we have done below.
Thermal Impact Assessment of Below-Water-Table Aggregate Extraction at the Strada Aggregates Hillsburgh Pit, Hillsburgh, ON.
Strada Aggregates operates a sand and gravel pit located northeast of the Village of Hillsburgh, ON. The Hillsburgh Pit license permits above-water-table extraction of sand and gravel from a 32.7 ha area and below-water-table extraction from a pond with a projected surface area of 9.6 ha when complete. The below-water-table extraction is to progress in four stages, from north to south, to a depth of 10 m.
Environmental Assessment of the West Detour Mine Expansion
Tier 2 Water Budget analysis completed under the Clean Water Act identified Middle Spencer Creek for further analysis at the Tier 3 Risk Assessment level. Earthfx was hired by the Halton–Hamilton Source Protection Region to complete assess the water quantity risks and drought sustainability the Greensville Municipal well. Major features for in the study area include the Niagara Escarpment, large quarry operations and growing urban development in the North Hamilton area.
Tier 3 Water Budget and Local Area Risk Assessment for the Greensville Groundwater Municipal System

Phase 2 Review of Potential Cumulative Effects to Surface Water and Groundwater from In-Situ Oil Sands Operations, Focusing on the MacKay River Watershed
The MacKay River Watershed, immediately northwest of Fort McMurray, AB, is a diverse oil sand development region with near-surface minable reserves and both shallow and deep steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) targets extending under the Birch Mountain headwater area. Significant land development modifications (roads, drill pads) and freshwater diversions from bedrock valleys, channel aquifers, and deeper confined formations are planned to support a range of SAGD operations.
Simulation of Groundwater Flow in the vicinity of the proposed Reeb Quarry, Town of Wainfleet, Ontario
A groundwater flow model was developed for the proposed Reeb Quarry and surrounding area. The property is located south of the Wainfleet Bog and west of the City of Port Colborne. An active quarry and a rehabilitated quarry are located on lands to the north and southwest of the property, respectively.
Integrated Hydrologic and Hydrogeologic Modelling of the Reid Road Reservoir Property
Earthfx completed an integrated GSFLOW modelling study in support of an application to extract gravel and bedrock from below the water table by James Dick Construction Ltd. (JDCL). Earthfx was tasked with characterizing the current hydrologic and hydrogeologic conditions on site and predicting future impacts of quarrying on Provincially Significant Wetlands (PSW), streamflow, and groundwater levels.
