Case Histories - Data Management
Project: CFB Chilliwack Data Management System
Client: Department of National Defense
Objectives:
Compile available site data into a relational database, and prepare an intuitive interface to give staff immediate access to the data, in both tabular and map format, including tools to compare and filter data against relevant criteria.
Outcomes:
savings in time by having immediate access to all data
useful management tool by allowing staff to validate and confirm previous interpretations
Key Aspects:
development of a robust user interface to facilitate the seeking and display of data
built in functions to filter data using federal or provincial environmental criteria
automated krigging and mapping of selected data
Project Description:
The assessment and decommissioning of DND bases produces considerable volumes of data pertaining to soil and water conditions, typically available only in hard copy tabular or text format. Seeking specific data is, therefore, time consuming, and often inconclusive if the required data is not found.
DND retained EarthFx to develop a prototype data management system for CFB Chilliwack to demonstrate the efficiencies of having immediate access to all available site data, in both tabular and map format. Furthermore, it was recognized that the system would also serve as a management tool, allowing staff to selectively query and analyze the data using the mapping, krigging and cross sectional analysis tools, in conjunction with the built in environmental criteria, to validate and confirm previous interpretations.
Applications:
The database data model is being considered for future tender documents to ensure that future contractor data can be seamlessly integrated into the common site database.
